Past vs Present: When Did It Happen?

Time doesn’t just change on a clock; it changes the words we use! Understanding the difference between the past and present tense is essential for clear communication. The present tense describes things that are happening right now or happen regularly, like “I walk to school.” The past tense, on the other hand, tells us about things that have already happened, often requiring us to add “-ed” to the end of a verb, changing “walk” to “walked.” However, English is full of surprises, and many verbs are irregular, changing completely like “run” becoming “ran.” Learning to switch between these tenses helps children tell stories and recount events in the correct order. It allows them to share what they did over the weekend versus what they are doing today. Mastering verb tenses improves writing fluency and reading comprehension. By practicing when to use specific actions, students gain control over the timeline of their language, making their stories easier to understand and follow.

📖 Understanding Past and Present Tenses

In English, verbs change their form to show when something happens. When we talk about things that happen right now or regularly, we use the present tense. For example, “She walks to school every day” tells us about a daily habit. The verb “walks” is in the present tense because it describes something that happens often.

When we talk about things that already happened, we use the past tense. Regular past tense verbs end in -ed, like “walked” or “played.” But many common verbs are irregular — they change in special ways. For example, “go” becomes “went“, “eat” becomes “ate“, and “see” becomes “saw“. Learning these irregular forms is one of the most important steps in English grammar!
