The Magic of the Wish Workshop

Have you ever dreamed of flying or wished it was sunny instead of rainy? In the Wish Workshop, we explore the grammar of wishing and hoping! This concept often involves using the phrase “I wish” followed by a past tense verb to talk about things we want to be different right now. For example, we say “I wish I knew the answer” or “I wish I had a puppy.” This helps us express imaginary situations or regrets in a way that is grammatically correct. It can be tricky because even though we use the past tense form, we are actually talking about the present! This distinction is a part of advanced grammar that helps students articulate their feelings and desires more clearly. By differentiating between “I hope” (which implies a real possibility) and “I wish” (which implies something unlikely or impossible), children learn to be precise in their communication. This skill encourages imagination while reinforcing complex verb structures. Step into the workshop and practice crafting the perfect sentence to make your wishes come true through words!

📖 Understanding Wish & If-Clauses

The verb “wish” is used to express desires about situations that are different from reality. In English, the grammatical form changes depending on when the situation occurs. For present or general situations, we use a past tense form after “wish”: for example, “I wish I knew the answer” (but I don’t know it now). For past regrets, we use the past perfect: “I wish I had studied harder” (but I didn’t study). When expressing annoyance about a habit, we can use “would”: “I wish you wouldn’t do that.” Conditional sentences with “if” follow similar patterns — second conditionals describe unreal present situations (“If I had more time, I would travel”), while third conditionals describe unreal past situations (“If I had known, I would have helped”). In this game, you will practise choosing the correct form to complete each sentence. Pay attention to the time reference in every sentence!
