Cracking the Passive Voice Code

Grammar can be puzzling, but understanding the difference between active and passive voice is key to advanced writing. In the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action, like “The chef cooked the meal.” However, in the passive voice, the subject receives the action, such as “The meal was cooked by the chef.” You can often spot the passive voice by looking for the phrase “to be” followed by a past participle. While the active voice is usually more direct and energetic, the passive voice is useful when we don’t know who did the action or when the action is more important than the doer. For instance, “The window was broken” focuses on the window, not the person who broke it. Learning to identify and use both structures gives students more control over the tone and focus of their sentences. It is a sophisticated tool that makes writing more versatile and precise.

📖Understanding the Passive Voice

In English, sentences can be written in two main voices: active and passive. In the active voice, the subject performs the action. For example, “The chef cooks the meal.” In the passive voice, the subject receives the action: “The meal is cooked by the chef.” To form the passive voice, we use the verb “to be” (in the correct tense) plus the past participle of the main verb. The formula is: Object + be + past participle + (by + subject). For example, “They built the house” becomes “The house was built by them.” The passive voice is useful when the action or result is more important than who did it, or when the doer is unknown.
